Lionsgate announced yesterday that the on screen adaption of The Hunger Games would be released on March 23, 2012, just a little over a year from today (421 days to be exact). In reality that's not a lot of time for a film that has not even been cast yet. Dorothy Pomerantz from Forbes, has an article discussing that ambitious time frame. The Hunger Games is arguably the most highly anticipated young adult franchise since Twilight. Fans now have only a little more than a year to wait for the first of three movies to hit theaters.
Lionsgate says it plans to release the first film, The Hunger Games, in March of 2012. That means they have just over a year to cast, film, edit and market the movie.
That’s a very ambitious time frame. It’s not unusual for it to take 18 months for a film to hit theaters after it starts production, and that’s after the film has been cast.
...With Harry Potter and Twilight winding down (Harry Potter ends this summer, Twilight next year) all eyes are on The Hunger Games. Fans constantly debate who should play Katniss (for what it’s worth, my pick is Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld from True Grit). The films will have to please fans and be accessible to newcomers. It will also have to walk a fine line with the violence in the story. A movie where kids kill each other can be tough to market.
Can they do it all in about a year? It will be interesting to see. So, what do you think? Are you nervous at all about the short time schedule for the film or do you have confidence that Gary Ross and crew will make the most of what time they have? www.downwiththecapitol.net/2011/01/lionsgate-had-hunger-games-on-ambitious.html
